Where’s the Metal? Bulk Density Considerations for Advanced Mining Projects
Density, grade, and volume are fundamental parameters for the estimation of mineral resources. Despite this, it is common for density to receive far less attention than volume, and certainly grade, through all aspects of the mineral resource estimation process. Neglecting to collect representative and quality density information, combined with oversimplification of the estimation approach, can result in poor estimates of density. Poor estimates of density result in poor estimates of tonnage, which can significantly affect the contained metal in the volumes reported in the Mineral Resource, through to the mine design/schedule. A number of important considerations, from the collection of density data through to the estimation process, are presented here with a number of practical examples.
